Overview

Our client is a reputable and growing multidisciplinary consultancy providing civil and structural engineering, surveying, and project management throughout the UK.

They are seeking an Associate Director to lead and grow a team delivering civil and structural engineering services across a mix of new-build, refurbishment, remedial and existing building projects.

The role combines technical leadership, project delivery, client relationship management and business development. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining technical quality, developing key client accounts, securing new work and supporting the continued growth of the business.

There are no fixed team sizes or direct reports, with engineers working across varied, technically challenging work alongside a changing mix of colleagues and sometimes partner consultancies.

Key Responsibilities

Technical & Project Leadership

• Lead the delivery of civil and structural engineering projects for new and existing buildings.
• Oversee structural assessments, defect diagnosis, remedial engineering and design commissions.
• Review and approve reports, calculations, drawings and specifications.
• Provide technical direction on complex engineering projects and investigations.
• Maintain high standards of technical quality, risk management and regulatory compliance.
• Ensure projects are delivered on programme and within budget.

Team Management

• Lead, manage and develop a team of engineers and technicians.
• Oversee resource planning, workload allocation and project resourcing.
• Mentor staff and support professional development and chartership progression.
• Promote a culture of quality, accountability and technical excellence.

Client Development & Business Growth

• Manage and strengthen relationships with key clients and professional contacts.
• Identify and secure opportunities for repeat business and new commissions.
• Prepare fee proposals, scopes of service and tender submissions.
• Support business development activities and contribute to revenue growth.
• Represent the business in client meetings, networking events and industry forums.

Commercial Responsibilities

• Monitor project performance, fees and profitability.
• Manage project risks and support financial forecasting.
• Contribute to the strategic development of the civil and structural engineering team.

Requirements

• Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Chartered Engineer (MIStructE or MICE).
• Proven track record in consulting engineering at Senior or Associate level.
• Background delivering civil and structural design projects for both new and existing buildings.
• Strong knowledge of structural assessment, defect diagnosis and remedial engineering.
• Demonstrable track record leading teams and managing project delivery.
• Established client-facing and business development skills.
• Commercially aware, with background managing fees, budgets and client expectations.
• Strong report writing, communication and technical review capability.
• Good knowledge of current UK design standards, regulations and industry guidance.

Desirable

• Forensic engineering and structural failure investigations.
• Work for insurers, solicitors, lenders, asset managers and loss adjusters.
• Historic buildings and traditional construction.
• Insurance-related structural assessments and subsidence investigations.
• Expert advisory or technical due diligence commissions.
