CX930 A Personal Assistant is required to support a 12 yr old boy within the local community.

A Personal Assistant is required to support a lively and energetic 12-year-old boy who enjoys swimming and exploring places of interest within the local community.

The hours will be used to provide one-to-one support during activities both in term time and school holidays. During term time, support will generally be provided on Fridays and Sundays, with Friday sessions dedicated to swimming, one of his favourite activities. Sunday sessions will vary and may include visits to places of interest based on his preferences and hobbies.

The aim of the support is to enable the young person to access enjoyable community activities, develop social skills, build confidence and independence, and ensure he remains safe whilst taking part in activities he enjoys.

He is an energetic, expressive and affectionate young person. He can become very excited and emotional and, when overwhelmed, may appear loud, agitated or distressed. His behaviour can change quickly depending on how he is feeling and what is happening around him. He responds best to calm communication, patience, reassurance and clear, simple instructions.

The young person experiences auditory and visual hallucinations at times, which can affect how he responds to people and his surroundings. During these situations, he requires support from someone who can remain calm, reassuring and patient.

He has limited awareness of danger and requires close supervision when out in the community, particularly in busy environments and unfamiliar places. When overwhelmed, he may become reluctant to move or alternatively move off quickly without recognising potential risks.

He also has continence needs and may require prompting and reminders, together with occasional support with personal care.

The successful applicant will be patient, reliable, understanding and able to build a positive working relationship with the young person and his family. Experience of supporting children with additional needs would be advantageous, although a caring and flexible approach is equally important.

Owing to the nature of this position, any offer of employment will be subject to a satisfactory checking report from the Disclosure and Barring Service, the cost of which will be met by the local authority.
