Your role at Proteus
You will join our growing engineering team at an exciting stage of Proteus' development. This is a varied role that combines electrical design with cross-disciplinary collaboration, working closely with our mechanical, software and systems engineers, as well as external suppliers and contractors.
Reporting to the Principal Electrical Systems Specialist, you will contribute to the design and delivery of our tidal turbine generation systems across the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to factory acceptance testing, installation and commissioning.
You will have the opportunity to take ownership of your work, deliver high-quality engineering solutions, support more complex projects as your experience grows, and broaden your knowledge across Proteus' product portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain electrical single-line diagrams for tidal turbine generation system architectures
- Produce and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and I/O tables using E-CAD tools (such as EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical and MS Visio), in support of Proteus' product designs
- Contribute to the selection and specification of electrical components, including switchgear, protective devices, instrumentation, sensors and LV/MV equipment
- Prepare electrical safety documentation, including compliance reports and procedures, ensuring alignment with applicable standards and regulations
- Support the development of control philosophy documents and functional design specifications, translating system requirements into clear engineering documentation
- Coordinate with internal engineering disciplines (mechanical, software and systems) and manage interfaces with external suppliers and contractors on electrical deliverables
- Perform cable sizing calculations for both subsea and in-air applications, including the selection and documentation of appropriate cable types, routes and protection schemes
- Support electrical assembly, manufacturing oversight and testing activities at Proteus' facilities and supplier premises
- Support verification and validation activities, including participation in design reviews, factory acceptance testing and commissioning
- Identify and apply relevant regulations, standards and industry best practices applicable to marine renewable energy systems
What are we looking for?
This role is ideal for an experienced electrical engineer who enjoys solving technically demanding problems, working across engineering disciplines, and contributing to the development of innovative renewable energy technology.
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
- Five or more years' industry experience in electrical engineering design and delivery within a technically demanding environment (e.g. renewable energy, offshore engineering, oil & gas etc)
- Solid working knowledge of cable sizing calculations for in-air and/or subsea applications, including relevant standards and methodologies
- Experience in electrical component selection and the ability to specify LV equipment, instrumentation and ancillary systems
- Experience in design of distributed PLC based systems using industrial communications protocols
- Ability to work independently or alongside qualified electrical technicians and Senior Authorised Persons during installation activities, including providing remote support
- Working knowledge of control philosophy development and functional design specification production, translating system requirements into practical designs

- Experience supporting or contributing to electrical assembly, manufacturing, testing or commissioning activities
- Hands-on experience assembling and/or testing electromechanical components and subsystems
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, professional engineering documentation and liaise effectively across disciplines
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage workload and meet project deadlines
- Experience designing motion control systems involving motors, variable speed drives, and associated sensor systems.
- Experience in protective device selection and coordination studies (e.g. discrimination studies and arc flash assessments)
- Experience designing systems with high reliability or availability, including an understanding of redundant system design philosophies for power or control systems
- Exposure to functional safety concepts and safety logic design, including familiarity with ISO 13849 or IEC 61511 and safety interlock systems
- Exposure to substation design or grid connection processes, including a working knowledge of MV or HV systems and grid code requirements
- Familiarity with machine design fundamentals as applied to generators or transformers in a power generation context
- Experience working with subsea or offshore power distribution systems
