Senior Embedded Software Test Engineer (Permanent)
Location: Birmingham (hybrid) - with travel to customer/test sites as needed Visa sponsorship: Not available
The role
Join a leading automotive & electrified powertrain organisation to own testing and validation of embedded software across inverter/motor control, BMS, and charging systems. You'll lead test activity from requirements through to bench/system validation, supporting safe, production-quality releases.
What you'll do
Lead embedded software test delivery to programme timescales Define test strategy, plans and specifications; execute and report results Run bench / HIL / system integration testing and practical validation Debug issues, investigate defects, and support root-cause analysis Validate safety-related behaviour in line with ISO 26262 Work closely with controls, hardware and systems teams, plus customers/suppliers Mentor junior engineers and drive good testing/documentation practice
What you'll need
Strong experience in embedded software testing (OEM / Tier 1 / similar) Good knowledge of embedded C/C++ and firmware testing on bespoke hardware Test lifecycle experience (requirements → strategy → execution → reporting) Scripting / automation using Python (or similar) Working understanding of functional safety and ISO 26262 Comfortable producing clear engineering documentation (test specs, reports, work instructions) Automotive networks & diagnostics: CAN/CAN-FD, UDS, OBD, J1939 (FlexRay beneficial) Confident communicator with internal and external stakeholders Engineering/Science degree (or equivalent experience)
Nice to have
UML/SysML exposure; model-based tools (e.g., Simulink/TargetLink) Experience testing BMS, inverters, DC/DC, onboard chargers Automotive SPICE awareness; calibration/diagnostic tool experience Control systems understanding
