Role Overview
The Engineering Manager is accountable for all design and engineering activities across their designated sector, working closely with the Sector Lead and Project Managers.
The role provides functional leadership to Engineers and Designers across internal teams and the supply chain, working with discipline leads to resolve technical issues and ensure effective delivery.
The Engineering Manager will also support work winning, estimating, procurement, construction and commissioning activities, while providing technical leadership and mentoring to graduates within the sector.
Key Responsibilities
Lead engineering and design activities across the sector, ensuring projects meet cost, programme, quality and technical requirements. Ensure compliance with design management, assurance and quality procedures. Oversee design reviews to ensure buildability, constructability, functionality and HSE requirements are met. Manage communication with internal and external stakeholders and ensure requirements are effectively incorporated into projects. Ensure health and safety is prioritised throughout all project stages. Identify and implement value engineering opportunities to improve functionality and reduce cost. Prepare and oversee engineering resource estimates, programmes and delivery against scope, schedule and budget. Conduct project inspections and audits, ensuring non-conformances and issues are addressed. Manage engineering resource allocation across the sector to meet programme requirements. Ensure design registers, assurance plans, meeting records and drawing registers are maintained. Manage formal technical communications, including RFIs, TQs, EWNs and MARs. Ensure designers' risk registers are suitable and maintained. Carry out CAT 1 and CAT 2 design checks. Act as Design Manager on smaller projects where required. Undertake peer reviews of design projects across other sectors. Work with Commercial teams to monitor design changes and cost variances. Support procurement of services and works required for project delivery. Work with Planning to coordinate design, installation and testing & commissioning activities, ensuring accurate resource, programme and cost forecasts. Attend FATs and SATs where required to ensure compliance with project requirements. Promote a positive working environment based on openness, trust, teamwork, communication, innovation and empowerment.
Essential Qualifications
Recognised Engineering degree from a UK-accredited institution. Chartered Engineer status / professional registration with the Engineering Council. Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution. SMSTS or IOSH Managing Safely. CSCS AQP or PQP minimum.
