Estimator – Construction
Location: Gloucester Salary: Competitive and negotiable depending on experience Job type: Permanent, full-time
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Estimator to join a long-established construction company based in Gloucester.
The business undertakes a diverse range of construction projects across the Midlands, South and South West, working within the education, residential, commercial, healthcare, private-client and insurance-repair sectors. Projects range from smaller refurbishment works through to major construction schemes valued at up to £25 million.
The company is looking for a capable and commercially aware Estimator who can accurately assess project costs and prepare competitive tenders.
Responsibilities
- Review tender documents, drawings, specifications and bills of quantities.
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for construction projects.
- Complete material and labour take-offs.
- Obtain and evaluate quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Identify suitable subcontractors for individual work packages.
- Prepare tender submissions and supporting documentation.
- Assess project risks, opportunities and potential cost implications.
- Work closely with the pre-construction, commercial and operational teams.
- Attend tender meetings, site visits and handover meetings.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of construction costs and market conditions.
- Assist with value-engineering exercises and alternative construction solutions.
- Ensure tenders are completed accurately and submitted within the required deadlines.
Candidate requirements
- Previous estimating experience within a main contractor or general construction environment.
- Good knowledge of construction methods, materials and subcontractor packages.
- Strong numerical, analytical and commercial skills.
- Able to read and interpret drawings, specifications and tender documentation.
- Good communication and negotiation abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tenders.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a wider pre-construction team.
- Relevant construction qualification would be beneficial but is not essential for an experienced candidate.
