Financial Director

• Hybrid Working: 3 days per week in the office

A leading global law firm is seeking an experienced and commercially minded Financial Director to lead its European finance function. This is a broad and highly visible leadership role, offering the opportunity to partner with senior lawyers and business leaders across multiple jurisdictions while maintaining oversight of the core operational finance activities that underpin a successful legal practice.

This Financial Director position requires a rare blend of strategic thinking and operational excellence. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable discussing firm strategy with senior stakeholders as they are overseeing billing, working capital, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day financial operations. Supported by a highly capable Senior Finance Manager and an established London-based team, you will play a key role in driving financial performance, process improvement, and commercial decision‑making across the business.

Key Responsibilities for the Financial Director

• Lead the European finance function across multiple offices and jurisdictions.
• Act as a trusted business partner to senior partners, practice leaders and executive management.
• Oversee financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and performance analysis.
• Drive operational excellence across billing, revenue control, cash flow management and working capital.
• Take ownership of regulatory and compliance matters, including COFA responsibilities and client money controls.
• Ensure robust financial reporting, technical accounting compliance and balance sheet integrity.
• Oversee tax matters, with particular focus on UK and international VAT processes.
• Support pricing, profitability analysis and broader commercial finance initiatives.
• Lead and develop a high-performing finance team while driving continuous improvement and best practice.
• Support strategic projects, systems developments and wider business transformation initiatives.

About You

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
• Proven experience operating at Financial Controller, Finance Director or CFO level within a law firm or professional services environment.
• Strong understanding of legal finance operations, including billing, revenue management, client money and regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrable expertise across financial and management accounting, forecasting, budgeting, treasury and tax.
• Strong knowledge of VAT and complex partnership structures.
• Experience partnering with senior stakeholders and influencing strategic decision‑making.
• Previous experience within a large or international law firm environment would be highly advantageous.
• A hands‑on leader who is equally comfortable managing detail and driving long‑term strategy.
