Fire Protection Engineer

Do you have demonstrable experience designing fire detection, alarm, suppression or firefighting systems within a highly regulated industry such as Nuclear, Defence, Energy, Oil & Gas or Power Generation? Have you produced and reviewed fire protection engineering calculations, specifications, design basis documents and technical reports as part of your role? Are you able to work remotely within the UK and travel occasionally to client sites, project locations and office locations when required?

The Opportunity An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Fire Protection Engineer to join a growing fire engineering team supporting major projects across the UK nuclear and energy sectors. The team is experiencing significant growth driven by increasing client demand and is involved in a diverse portfolio of work including: Nuclear New Build projects Operational generation facilities Life extension programmes Defuelling projects Small Modular Reactor (SMR) developments Your duties and responsibilities will be Independently plan and execute complex fire protection technical assignments, including the system design of fire detection and alarm system systems, firefighting and suppression systems to codes/standards/regulations. Develop, coordinate, and review technical deliverables such as fire system calculations, design inputs, layouts, specifications, design-basis documents, system narratives, cause-and-effect documentation, technical assessments, reports, work plans, and technical correspondence. Resolve routine and complex technical issues within assigned scopes and identify matters requiring escalation to discipline manager, regulatory-support function, or other designated authorities. Lead assigned technical interfaces with internal stakeholders, clients, key fire safety stakeholders, and other disciplines, including presenting technical issues, explaining assumptions, documenting decisions, and supporting resolution of comments. Independently plan and execute complex passive fire protection technical assignments, including providing advice on fire compartmentation, fire dampers, fire doors and fire stopping (Desirable not essential). You will have the following qualifications & experience: Demonstrable experience in Fire Protection Engineering. Strong understanding of fire detection, alarm, suppression and fire-fighting systems. Experience delivering engineering solutions within highly regulated environments. Knowledge and practical application of relevant fire engineering codes and standards. Ability to lead technical discussions and manage stakeholder interfaces. Experience producing and reviewing engineering calculations and technical documentation. It’s great if you also have the following Degree qualified in a STEM discipline. Membership of a recognised professional institution such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE). Experience working within the nuclear, energy, defence or similarly regulated sectors. Knowledge and application of NFPA codes and standards. Experience of passive fire protection design and assessment. The setting for the role This role offers predominantly remote working, with occasional travel required for meetings, stakeholder engagement, project delivery activities and visits to UK office locations.
