Head of Engineering
- Remote, United Kingdom
- Permanent·Remote
- Full time
Job Description
LOW6 is looking for a Head of Engineering to own the day-to-day leadership of our software development teams: the people, the delivery and the technical execution behind our platform.
This is a hands-on engineering leadership role, not a strategic technology executive role. Company-wide technology strategy, platform architecture direction and AI strategy sit with the CTO seat (currently a fractional bridge, transitioning to a permanent hire); you report into that seat and own engineering delivery underneath it.
This is a multi country, remote working team, and part of the role is making sure it operates as one coherent function with consistent standards and delivery rigour across every location, rather than as separate pockets working to different norms.
You will lead, coach and grow our engineering teams, drive the standards and practices that make delivery predictable, and be the technical backbone the CTO relies on to keep the platform running and improving day to day. If you're a hands-on engineering leader who builds strong teams and ships reliable software, we want to hear from you.
RESPONSIBILTIES
Engineering Delivery & Execution
- Stay genuinely hands-on: personally review code quality, system design and security posture across key parts of the platform, not solely through team reporting, so there is real confidence in what's robust and what isn't, not just an assurance that it shipped.
- Own day-to-day security and reliability practice, code review rigour, vulnerability triage, incident response quality, so risk is caught and managed operationally, not discovered after the fact.
- Own the day-to-day delivery of software development work across the engineering teams, ensuring predictable, high-quality output.
- Drive architectural decisions and system design within the platform, in line with direction set by the CTO.
- Ensure scalability, reliability and code quality across the engineering estate.
- Establish one enforced delivery process across engineering, replacing the multiple competing versions currently in circulation, so there is a single, consistently applied way of working.
People, Culture & Team Building
- Lead, mentor and coach the software development teams, fostering psychological safety, collaboration, ownership and continuous learning.
- Raise the floor on how the team operates: assess capability with evidence rather than instinct, ensure the right people are in the right roles, and coach, elevate or action change where the bar isn't being met.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding and retention for engineering roles.
- Instil a strong team culture aligned with LOW6's values, and act as the point of escalation for team issues and conflict resolution.
Delivery & Process Excellence
- Be a key contributor to the weekly pre-sales conversations and delivery reviews already in flight, and help continually improve those forums, and any others needed, to keep engineering and delivery operating as one tightly coherent unit.
- Work with Product and the CTO to define and refine methodologies that fit how the business actually delivers.
- Continuously evaluate and improve team processes, tools and practices to reduce friction.
- Drive best practices for code quality, testing, CI/CD and operational excellence.
Efficiency & AI-Enabled Operating
- Work in close partnership with the CTO to pursue good practice in AI-enabled operating, improving the efficiency of how the team works: output delivered against cost, not simply headcount added to grow output.
- The team operates at 24 today. The goal over time is more output per unit of input, which may mean a larger team producing significantly more, or a similar‑sized team producing more efficiently, depending on the pace of business growth. Comfort with that ambiguity, and a genuine appetite for driving it, matters more than a fixed headcount target.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven experience in a hands‑on engineering leadership role (Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager, Senior Engineering Lead or equivalent), ideally in a start‑up or high‑growth environment.
- A genuine hands‑on technical background: someone who still reviews code and forms their own view on whether a design is sound, not a delivery‑flavoured manager once removed from the technical work.
- Strong technical background: 8+ years in software development, with significant experience (3‑5+ years) leading engineering teams.
- Deep knowledge of software development, systems architecture and cloud infrastructure, with a practical understanding of AI‑assisted development.
- A coach and servant leader with a track record of building, motivating, mentoring and retaining engineering teams (local and remote).
- Extensive experience with agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban), CI/CD best practices, and the full software development lifecycle.
- Genuine appetite for AI‑enabled operating efficiency, comfortable partnering deeply with the CTO on how it's applied to team structure and output, not just tooling.
- Strong communication skills, able to work effectively with engineers day to day and report clearly to senior leadership.
- Comfortable working under a CTO rather than owning the seat outright, at least for now, this role has genuine room to grow as the technology function matures.
- Background in gamification, iGaming, FinTech or a similar fast‑paced, high‑transactional industry is a strong advantage.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field preferred.
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE (DESIREABLE)
- Experience with platform or multi‑tenant product architecture, ideally where a single core platform serves multiple branded deployments.
- Architecture and code review experience with Node.js, TypeScript, Redis, SQL.
- Understanding of modern web frameworks (React.js, Vue.js) and serverless architecture.
- Hands‑on familiarity with AI/ML tooling, LLM integration and AI‑assisted development practices.
- Familiarity with DevOps tooling and infrastructure as code.
- Deep understanding of APIs, microservices and database design.
- Awareness of security, scalability and performance optimisation in distributed systems.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive salary and package.
- Fully remote work, with regular team get‑togethers.
- Monthly working‑from‑home and gym membership allowance.
- Workplace pension, with optional salary sacrifice.
- The opportunity to work on challenging and impactful projects that directly contribute to the company's success.
- A collaborative and supportive team environment.
- Opportunities for continuous learning and career growth.
