Head of Outdoor Pursuits

About the Role

Our client is looking for an inspiring and experienced Head of Outdoor Pursuits to lead and develop their comprehensive outdoor adventure program in Glasgow . This senior role requires a strategic thinker with a passion for adventure education and a proven track record of managing diverse outdoor activities safely and effectively for groups of all ages. You will be responsible for curriculum development, staff management, risk assessment, and ensuring the highest standards of delivery and participant experience, contributing to a culture of exploration, resilience, and personal growth for all involved.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and oversee a diverse range of outdoor pursuit programs, including hiking, climbing, kayaking, and team-building activities.
• Develop and manage robust risk management strategies and operating procedures for all activities.
• Recruit, train, mentor, and manage a team of qualified outdoor instructors, fostering a high-performance culture.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations, certifications, and accreditations for outdoor activities.
• Manage the budget for the outdoor pursuits department, including equipment procurement and maintenance.
• Liaise with internal stakeholders and external partners to develop and promote the program effectively.

Requirements

• Extensive experience (7+ years) in leading and managing outdoor pursuit programs, preferably in an educational or organizational setting.
• Advanced qualifications in relevant outdoor activities (e.g., ML, RCI, BCU/UKCC coaching awards) and comprehensive risk management expertise.
• Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, training, and performance management.
• Strong understanding of health and safety legislation pertaining to outdoor activities.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
