About the Role

We are looking for a Junior Fire & Smoke Engineer to join our growing Fire & Electrical department. This is a great opportunity for someone who already has some hands-on experience with fire alarm systems, smoke ventilation or AOV systems and wants to develop their career further within the industry. Fire and smoke experience is the key requirement for this role. You do not need to be a fully qualified Fire Alarm or AOV Engineer, and we are not looking for an electrical design engineer or someone whose experience is primarily CAD/design based. You may come from a background such as Fire Alarm Engineering, AOV/Smoke Ventilation, Fire & Security, Fire Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance with fire alarm experience, or another closely related building services environment. You will work alongside experienced engineers carrying out PPM, testing, servicing, fault finding and minor remedial works across high-end residential developments, apartment blocks, commercial properties and managed estates. Full training and support will be provided to develop your technical knowledge and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

Fire Alarm Systems Assist with the planned preventative maintenance and testing of fire alarm systems. Carry out routine inspections and testing of fire alarm panels, detectors, sounders, call points and associated equipment. Assist with fault finding and investigation of fire alarm faults. Replace basic components where appropriately trained. Identify defects and report issues requiring further investigation. Assist senior engineers with remedial and installation works. Complete accurate service reports, test results and job sheets. Smoke Ventilation & AOV Systems Assist with servicing and testing of Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs) and smoke ventilation systems. Test smoke vents, actuators, control panels and associated equipment. Assist with fault finding on AOV and smoke control systems. Check the operation of smoke control equipment and associated interfaces. Identify defective components and report findings to senior engineers. Assist with remedial works and component replacement. Develop your knowledge of AOV and smoke ventilation systems within residential and commercial buildings. Electrical Carry out basic electrical checks and maintenance associated with fire and smoke systems. Assist with fault finding on electrical equipment connected to fire alarm and AOV systems. Work with control panels, power supplies, batteries, relays and associated wiring. Assist with emergency lighting inspections and testing. Develop your electrical knowledge as part of the wider role. This is not an electrical design or CAD-based position. The role is primarily hands-on servicing, maintenance, testing and fault finding of fire alarm and smoke ventilation systems. PPM & Reactive Maintenance Attend scheduled PPM visits across London and the Home Counties. Respond to reactive fire and smoke system faults where required. Follow company PPM schedules and ensure all required checks are completed. Complete engineer job sheets through the company's internal system. Provide photographs, test results and clear descriptions of defects. Highlight remedial works to the senior engineer and office team. Working Within Residential Developments A large part of the role will involve working within high-end residential developments and apartment blocks. You will therefore be expected to: Deal professionally with residents, concierge teams and estate managers. Work respectfully within occupied apartments and communal areas. Maintain a clean and tidy working environment. Protect residents' property and building finishes. Follow site-specific access and permit procedures. Communicate clearly when explaining issues or works required. Training & Development We will support the successful candidate in developing their technical knowledge and qualifications. Training may include: Fire alarm servicing and testing. AOV and smoke ventilation systems. Emergency lighting. Fire and smoke system fault finding. Manufacturer-specific fire and smoke system training. Relevant industry qualifications. Electrical training where required. Health & safety and site-specific training. Experience & Qualifications Essential Previous hands-on experience with fire alarm systems, AOVs, smoke ventilation or a closely related fire/smoke discipline. Basic understanding of electrical systems. Good practical ability and willingness to work hands-on. Full UK driving licence. Good communication skills. Willingness to learn and develop. Professional approach when working in occupied residential properties.

Desirable

Experience servicing or maintaining fire alarm systems. Experience with AOV / smoke ventilation systems. Emergency lighting experience. FIA training or equivalent. Awareness of BS 5839. ECS card or similar industry accreditation. Experience working within residential developments or facilities management. Electrical qualification or formal electrical training. The Person We are looking for a junior Fire & Smoke Engineer, rather than a general electrical engineer. The ideal candidate will already have some practical exposure to fire alarms, AOVs or smoke ventilation and be keen to build on that experience. You do not need to be fully qualified across every discipline. We will provide training and development, but we would ideally like someone who already understands the basics of fire and smoke systems and wants to make this their career. You will initially work closely with our senior Fire & Electrical Engineers, gradually taking on more responsibility as your skills and qualifications develop. We are particularly interested in candidates from Fire Alarm, AOV, Smoke Ventilation, Fire & Security or related fire systems backgrounds.
