Job Description
Design Engineer - Mechanical
Key Responsibilities
Create innovative, cost-effective mechanical designs from concept through to production. Produce detailed 3D models and engineering drawings using 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks. Design components and assemblies including sheet metal, machined, turned, cast and fabricated parts. Apply sound mechanical and automotive engineering principles to develop practical, manufacturable designs. Consider manufacturing, assembly and through-life support within designs. Revise and improve existing designs to meet new requirements. Maintain accurate design records, drawing revisions and PDM controls. Work closely with Senior Engineers, Project Engineers and wider teams to deliver design solutions. Liaise with suppliers to source components and support manufacturing requirements. Assess prototypes for fit, function and performance. Select appropriate materials for component requirements. Carry out first-principles calculations and provide input into FEA/CAE assessments. Participate in design reviews and implement feedback. Support vehicle testing, data logging and instrumentation where required. Key Requirements
HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a related discipline. Proven experience in an engineering design role. Strong 3D CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks. Experience producing detailed engineering drawings and models for components and assemblies. Practical knowledge of automotive systems. Experience with manufacturing, workshop or production environments. Understanding of mechanical design, materials, manufacturing processes and design for production. Experience with PDM and drawing/document control. Knowledge of first-principles calculations and FEA/CAE. Strong communication skills with internal teams, suppliers and customers. Good technical report writing and project documentation skills. Able to manage deadlines, work independently and contribute effectively within a team. Strong problem-solving skills with a practical and disciplined approach
