About the Role
Our client is seeking a meticulous and experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join their expanding team, operating on a remote basis with key reporting responsibilities to their Sunderland office. This role is essential for assessing and managing the risk associated with mortgage applications, ensuring that all lending decisions comply with company policies and regulatory standards. You will play a vital part in the mortgage lifecycle, from initial application review to final approval, safeguarding the institution's financial health within the competitive Banking & Finance sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate mortgage applications, assessing borrower creditworthiness, property valuations, and overall risk exposure.
- Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with internal lending policies, risk appetite statements, and relevant legal/regulatory guidelines.
- Review and analyze borrower financial documentation, including income verification, asset statements, and credit reports.
- Make informed decisions on mortgage loan approvals, rejections, or modifications based on thorough risk assessment.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with brokers, loan officers, and internal stakeholders regarding underwriting decisions and requirements.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of mortgage lending regulations, market trends, and best practices.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Mortgage Underwriter or in a similar lending assessment role.
- Solid understanding of credit risk assessment, financial statement analysis, and property valuation principles.
- Familiarity with mortgage origination software and industry-standard underwriting guidelines.
- Excellent analytical and decision-making skills, with a keen eye for detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of explaining complex decisions clearly.
