Optical Network Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking an expert Optical Network Engineer to join their advanced network design team in Edinburgh . This role is critical for the design, implementation, and optimization of our high-capacity optical transport networks, which form the backbone of our telecommunications services. You will be involved in cutting-edge technology deployment, ensuring the scalability, reliability, and performance of our fibre optic infrastructure across Scotland. Key Responsibilities

• Design and plan optical network architectures, including DWDM, OTN, and Ethernet-based transport solutions.
• Configure, test, and commission optical transport equipment from vendors such as Ciena, Nokia, or Infinera.
• Analyze network performance data, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimization strategies for optical links.
• Collaborate with planning and operations teams to ensure seamless integration of new optical services.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, including network designs, test plans, and troubleshooting guides.
• Stay updated with advancements in optical networking technologies and propose innovative solutions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in designing and managing optical transport networks .
• Strong knowledge of DWDM, OTN, SONET/SDH, and Ethernet technologies.
• Hands-on experience with optical test equipment and fiber characterization tools.
• Familiarity with optical network management systems and software.
• Experience working in a network engineering role within the telecoms industry , ideally in the Edinburgh region.
