Optical Network Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a dedicated Optical Network Engineer to join their expanding network operations team, based remotely but with occasional travel to their hub in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear . This role is central to the design, deployment, and optimisation of high-capacity optical networks that form the backbone of modern communication services. You will work with state-of-the-art DWDM and optical transport technologies, ensuring the reliability and scalability of our client's infrastructure. This is a fantastic opportunity for a specialist engineer to contribute to critical projects within the dynamic telecoms landscape , working autonomously and collaboratively to achieve network excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain optical networks, including DWDM systems , OTN, and coherent optics.
• Perform network capacity planning and forecasting to ensure future service demands are met.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues within the optical transport network, minimising service disruption.
• Develop and execute test plans for new equipment and configurations before deployment.
• Collaborate with vendors and internal teams on technology evaluation and selection for optical networking components.
• Create and update detailed network documentation, including topology maps and configuration standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical discipline.
• Minimum 4 years of experience in designing and operating optical transport networks .
• Proficiency with DWDM technologies, spectral analysis, and optical power budgeting.
• Familiarity with major optical equipment vendors (e.g., Ciena, Nokia, Infinera).
• Understanding of IP networking principles and their integration with optical layers.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to work effectively in a remote team environment.
