Optical Network Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a skilled Optical Network Engineer to join their established team in Reading . This role is essential for the design, implementation, and maintenance of their fibre optic network infrastructure, ensuring high-speed, reliable connectivity for their customers. You will work with state-of-the-art optical technologies and play a key part in expanding and upgrading the network. This position demands a hands-on approach, technical expertise, and a commitment to delivering exceptional network performance in a challenging operational environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer optical network solutions, including DWDM, OTN, and PON technologies.
• Plan and execute network upgrades, expansions, and modifications to meet growing capacity demands.
• Perform network troubleshooting and fault diagnosis on optical transmission systems.
• Utilize optical test equipment (OTDR, Optical Spectrum Analyzers) for testing and validation.
• Collaborate with field technicians and other engineering teams on network deployment and maintenance.
• Develop and maintain detailed network documentation, including fibre path maps and equipment configurations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
• 3-5 years of experience in optical network engineering or a similar role.
• Strong knowledge of optical transmission technologies, including DWDM principles.
• Experience with optical network planning tools and NMS/EMS systems.
• Familiarity with fibre optic cabling standards and best practices.
• Excellent analytical skills and ability to work independently on technical challenges.
