Patent Attorney

Overview

In this role you will guide R&D teams on invention protection and IP strategy, building and defending patent portfolios across chemistry and pharma domains. You will work with global stakeholders to manage filings, opinions, and due diligence, shaping freedom-to-operate and strategic IP positioning throughout the product lifecycle. You will advise on transactional IP matters and collaborate with outside counsel to ensure high-quality, timely deliverables aligned with business goals. Responsibilities

• Provide strategic, business-focused IP counsel to R&D on invention protection, portfolio development, publication strategy and third-party risks
• Build and manage patent portfolios for R&D projects across molecules, processes, manufacturing, platforms and clinical developments
• Render patentability, validity and freedom-to-operate opinions and develop IP strategies to strengthen positions
• Apply knowledge of national and global patent law and trends to shape strategy and advice
• Understand and apply other exclusivity protections where appropriate
• Communicate effectively with legal, IP and R&D colleagues and external partners
• Manage relationships with outside counsel and collaborators across a multicultural global patent function
• Conduct due diligence and provide risk assessments including FTO, infringement, validity and mitigation strategies
• Provide IP support for M&A, research collaborations, and in-licensing with contract drafting/advice
• Ensure high-quality, timely delivery of work aligned with business goals and budgets

Key requirements

• Juris Doctor degree with admission to at least one state bar and USPTO registration

• expertise in US and PCT patent law, filing and prosecution
• familiarity with European patent law and other major global patent systems
