Principal Data Scientist - Bioinformatics

About the Role

Our client is actively seeking a distinguished Principal Data Scientist with a strong background in Bioinformatics to join their flagship research division based in Milton Keynes . This senior leadership role is critical in driving the strategic application of data science and machine learning to unlock complex biological insights from large-scale datasets. You will lead projects, mentor junior scientists, and develop cutting-edge analytical frameworks that underpin significant advancements in their research programs. This is a hands-on role requiring deep technical expertise and the ability to influence research direction, working within a world-class facility dedicated to scientific excellence and innovation. The role is not remote, requiring full-time presence at our Milton Keynes site.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of advanced machine learning models and statistical analyses for complex biological data (e.g., genomics, proteomics, clinical data).
• Develop scalable data processing pipelines and analytical workflows to support high-throughput research initiatives.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including biologists, chemists, and clinicians, to define research questions and translate them into data-driven solutions.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to a team of data scientists and bioinformaticians.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and bioinformatics, and identify opportunities for their application.
• Communicate complex findings and strategic recommendations effectively to senior management and scientific stakeholders.

Requirements

• PhD or equivalent advanced degree in Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
• Extensive experience (8+ years) in applying data science and machine learning techniques to biological or biomedical research.
• Expertise in programming languages such as Python or R, and proficiency with data science libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
• Deep understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms, and experimental design.
• Proven experience in managing and analyzing large, complex datasets, including genomic and proteomic data.
• Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead projects and teams in a scientific setting in Milton Keynes .
