Principal Grid Connection Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and technically astute Principal Grid Connection Engineer to join their team in Reading . This senior role is central to facilitating the integration of new energy generation assets into the national grid. You will be responsible for leading the technical aspects of grid connection applications, negotiating with grid operators, and ensuring compliance with all relevant grid codes and standards. This is a critical leadership position requiring deep expertise in power systems, regulatory frameworks, and project management, essential for driving the growth of renewable energy infrastructure in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the technical assessment of grid connection feasibility for renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, and battery storage.
• Prepare and submit detailed grid connection applications, including power system study reports and technical drawings.
• Engage directly with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and National Grid to negotiate connection terms and resolve technical challenges.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant grid codes, such as the Grid Code in England and Wales, and relevant European standards.
• Oversee the design and specification of grid connection infrastructure, including substations, switchgear, and protection systems.
• Provide expert technical advice and mentorship to junior engineers and project teams throughout the connection process.

Requirements

• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent professional registration.
• A minimum of 12 years of experience in power systems engineering, with a strong specialization in grid connections.
• In-depth understanding of grid connection processes, power system studies (load flow, short circuit, stability), and grid codes.
• Proven experience in managing grid connection projects for large-scale energy assets.
• Familiarity with regulatory frameworks governing electricity networks in the UK and Europe.
• Excellent negotiation, communication, and leadership skills.
