Principal Investigator - Drug Discovery

About the Role

Our client is seeking a visionary Principal Investigator to lead their dynamic drug discovery research group in Cardiff . This senior role is critical for driving innovation in the development of novel therapeutics for unmet medical needs. You will be responsible for setting the scientific direction of the group, managing research projects from target identification through to preclinical development, and fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment. The ideal candidate will have a deep expertise in medicinal chemistry or pharmacology, a proven track record of leading successful research programs, and a passion for translating scientific discoveries into impactful medicines. Key Responsibilities

• Set the strategic scientific vision and research agenda for the drug discovery team.
• Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of scientists in experimental design, execution, and data analysis.
• Oversee the identification and validation of novel drug targets and the development of small molecule or biologic therapeutics.
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure timely achievement of key development milestones.
• Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., DMPK, toxicology, clinical development) and external partners to advance programs.
• Author and present scientific findings internally and externally at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, Biology, or a related life science discipline.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with a significant portion in drug discovery research.
• Demonstrated success in leading research programs from discovery to early development stages.
• Expertise in key areas of drug discovery, such as target validation, hit identification, lead optimization, and preclinical pharmacology.
• Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and drug development processes.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
