Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join their esteemed engineering department in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, UK . This senior position involves providing expert technical leadership in the design and development of advanced mechanical products and systems. You will be responsible for tackling the most complex engineering challenges, driving innovation, and ensuring the highest standards of design integrity and performance. This role is critical for mentoring design engineers and shaping the future technical direction of new product development.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of complex mechanical assemblies and components from concept to production.
• Perform advanced FEA analysis , fatigue analysis, and other critical engineering simulations.
• Develop and refine design standards, processes, and best practices for the engineering team.
• Provide expert technical consultation and guidance to project teams and management.
• Oversee component selection, material specification, and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing and quality assurance, to ensure manufacturability and reliability.

Requirements

• MSc or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in mechanical design and engineering.
• Demonstrated expertise in CAD/CAE software and advanced analysis techniques.
• In-depth knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and product development lifecycles.
• Strong leadership capabilities and experience mentoring senior engineers.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement.
