Principal Scientist - Drug Discovery

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly accomplished Principal Scientist to lead critical drug discovery initiatives within their dynamic research team in Belfast . This senior role is integral to identifying and advancing novel therapeutic candidates from target validation through to preclinical development. You will leverage your extensive expertise in small molecule or biologic drug discovery, guiding research strategies, managing project teams, and fostering innovation. Key Responsibilities

• Lead and execute integrated drug discovery programs, from target identification and validation to lead optimization.
• Design and manage complex research projects, ensuring scientific rigor and timely delivery of milestones.
• Mentor and supervise a team of scientists and research associates, fostering a culture of scientific excellence and collaboration.
• Develop and implement innovative discovery strategies, staying abreast of cutting-edge technologies and scientific advancements in Belfast .
• Collaborate effectively with internal and external partners, including CROs and academic institutions.
• Prepare and present research findings to senior management, scientific advisory boards, and at international conferences.

Requirements

• PhD in Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline with a strong focus on drug discovery.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with a proven track record of successfully advancing drug candidates.
• Extensive experience in multiple stages of the drug discovery process (e.g., target validation, hit identification, lead optimization).
• Strong understanding of medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics, and preclinical development.
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities and experience managing cross-functional project teams.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, vital for collaborating across different departments and locations in Northern Ireland .
