Principal Scientist - Drug Discovery

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Principal Scientist to lead critical projects within their Drug Discovery division, based in their state-of-the-art facility in Sunderland . This senior role requires a deep understanding of modern drug discovery methodologies and a proven track record of advancing candidate molecules through the preclinical pipeline. You will be instrumental in defining research strategies, designing and executing experiments, and mentoring a team of talented researchers. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the strategic planning and execution of drug discovery projects from target identification through to preclinical candidate selection.
• Design and manage complex experimental programs, utilizing a range of in vitro and in vivo pharmacology techniques.
• Interpret experimental data, draw sound conclusions, and provide strategic guidance for project progression.
• Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including chemistry, biology, DMPK, and toxicology.
• Mentor and develop junior scientists, fostering a high-performance research environment.
• Stay abreast of scientific literature and emerging technologies relevant to drug discovery.

Requirements

• PhD in Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related life science discipline.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, with a strong focus on small molecule drug discovery.
• Demonstrated success in leading drug discovery projects and delivering preclinical candidates.
• Expertise in key therapeutic areas and relevant assay development.
• Strong understanding of medicinal chemistry, ADME/Tox principles, and PK/PD relationships.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to thrive in a collaborative setting in Sunderland .
