Principal Scientist - Drug Discovery

About the Role

Our client is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Principal Scientist to lead critical projects within their Drug Discovery division in Belfast . This senior role will involve driving the identification and validation of novel therapeutic targets, designing and executing in vitro and in vivo studies, and contributing to the strategic direction of the company's R&D pipeline. You will work in a cutting-edge laboratory environment, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of chemists, biologists, and pharmacologists. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments for drug discovery programs, focusing on target validation and hit-to-lead optimization.
• Develop and implement innovative assays to assess compound efficacy, potency, and selectivity.
• Oversee the work of junior scientists and research associates, providing mentorship and scientific guidance.
• Collaborate closely with medicinal chemists to design and synthesize novel drug candidates.
• Manage project timelines, resources, and external collaborations to ensure timely project progression.
• Contribute to the company's intellectual property portfolio through invention and patent applications.

Requirements

• PhD in Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
• Extensive experience (8+ years) in drug discovery research within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.
• Demonstrated expertise in a specific therapeutic area (e.g., oncology, immunology, neuroscience).
• Proven track record of leading successful drug discovery projects from target identification to candidate selection.
• Strong knowledge of assay development, in vitro/in vivo pharmacology, and PK/PD principles.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, essential for working in a dynamic team in Belfast .
