Principal Substation Design Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and authoritative Principal Substation Design Engineer to lead their design team in Sheffield, South Yorkshire . This senior role involves the overall technical leadership and direction for the design of high-voltage electrical substations. You will be responsible for setting design standards, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring the successful delivery of complex substation projects from concept to completion. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of technical excellence, strong leadership capabilities, and a deep understanding of substation engineering principles and practices within the UK energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design process for high-voltage substations (e.g., 132kV, 275kV, 400kV), ensuring compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.
• Provide expert technical guidance and oversight on all aspects of substation design, including equipment selection, layout, protection, and earthing.
• Develop and maintain design philosophies, standards, and procedures for the substation engineering team.
• Mentor and develop a team of substation design engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Review and approve technical designs, drawings, and calculations produced by the engineering team.
• Act as a key technical advisor on projects, liaising with clients, project managers, and other stakeholders.

Requirements

• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent professional qualification.
• A minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in substation design engineering, with significant leadership responsibility.
• Extensive knowledge of high-voltage substation components, protection systems, and grid codes.
• Proficiency in substation design software, CAD packages, and relevant analytical tools.
• Strong understanding of project lifecycle management and contract administration.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and inspire.
