Project Design Engineer Location - Desborough Northamptonshire Pemanent Position £40,000 - £45,000 Monday to Friday working
Due to continued growth and an increasing project pipeline, our client are looking to strengthen their engineering team with an additional engineering professional who is eager to take ownership of complex projects and build a long-term career within the business. You'll be part of a collaborative team that values continuous improvement, innovation and engineering excellence. This is an excellent opportunity for a Project Design Engineer to work on bespoke plant layouts, conveyor systems and process equipment, helping deliver innovative solutions for customers across a wide range of industries.
The Role
Key Responsibilities
As a Project Design Engineer, reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will take ownership of projects from concept through to design, manufacture, installation and commissioning. The role is broken down into three areas Design, Engineering and General and the role will involve the following
Project Design
Produce 2D/3D GA drawings for Projects and Sales, integrating in-house equipment with third‑party machinery (shredders, magnets, optical sorters etc.) Optimise layouts for space, material flow and process efficiency Work with Sales/Projects teams to refine layouts through to Design Freeze Ensure design quality, cost, time and standardisation are considered throughout Use AutoCAD and SolidWorks as primary design platformsProject Engineering
Lead engineering development from concept through manufacturing, testing and commissioning Model and detail in-house products, producing full manufacturing drawings from 3D models Create and release BOMs within the company MRP system Produce and maintain technical documentation (manuals, specifications, H&S, maintenance etc.) Define product technical specifications aligned with internal standards and industry legislation Attend site to take/check measurements Liaise with customers to ensure project expectations are met Challenge existing designs and manufacturing methods to drive improvement Work closely with Manufacturing, Projects and Sales teams Provide engineering support during installation, commissioning and testing Support the Project Manager throughout the project lifecycle
General Responsibilities
Maintain a customer‑centric approach and deliver a positive experience Investigate issues proactively and remove root causes Aim for continuous improvement and excellence Follow company Vision, Mission and Values Visit completed installations and competitor sites to analyse design and costing decisions Keep up to date with new technologies through trade shows, networking and research Support Sales during tender submissions Attend internal meetings and site visits as required Follow Quality Assurance, Working Procedures and Health & Safety regulationKey skills & experience
To be considered for this role applicants are require to have an extensive background of project engineering, project design with project management experience and will be able to demonstrate the following.
General Arrangement (GA) drawings and system layout experience SolidWorks & AutoCAD (GA, design & detailing) Sheet metal and fabrication design Experience designing platforms, stairs, walkways, handrailing, legs, chutes etc. Managing costs & BOMs ERP/MRP systems AI and automation in design Project management experience Experience with special purpose machinery (ideally conveyors) Recycling equipment experience (advantageous) AI and automation (advantageous)
