An established professional services firm is continuing to expand its specialist Innovation Tax team and is seeking an ambitious finance professional to support the preparation and delivery of R&D Tax Relief claims for innovative businesses across the UK and Ireland. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly experienced and collaborative team, helping clients access valuable R&D incentives that support investment, growth and innovation.
Your New RoleWorking closely with R&D Tax Managers, you will be responsible for preparing the financial components of RDEC, ERIS and NI-ERIS R&D Tax Relief claims. You will analyse financial data, prepare claim cost schedules, reconcile expenditure to accounting records, and maintain robust supporting documentation to ensure claims are accurate, compliant and fully evidenced.This is a specialist finance support role and is ideally suited to someone with experience in accounting, audit, financial analysis, tax support or R&D tax claim preparation.
Key Responsibilities
- Gather and review financial information from client businesses, including payroll reports, general ledger data, invoices and project cost records.
- Prepare R&D claim cost schedules covering staff costs, subcontractors, externally provided workers, consumables, software, cloud computing and data costs.
- Reconcile claim calculations to management accounts, payroll records, nominal ledger balances and corporation tax schedules.
- Assist with apportionment calculations where expenditure relates to both qualifying and non-qualifying activities.
- Document methodologies, assumptions and supporting evidence used within claims.
- Identify inconsistencies, incomplete information and unsupported costs, raising queries where appropriate.
- Support the preparation of financial information for claim reports and Additional Information Forms.
- Maintain detailed working papers and evidence packs to support internal reviews and potential HMRC enquiries.
- Manage multiple client assignments while ensuring claims are completed accurately and within agreed deadlines.
What You'll Need to Succeed
- Previous experience in finance, accounting, audit, tax, R&D tax support or financial analysis.
- Strong Excel skills, including reconciliations, data analysis, pivot tables and structured working papers.
- Ability to interpret payroll data, accounting records, invoices and project costing information.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to identify anomalies and inconsistencies.
- Knowledge of R&D Tax Relief qualifying expenditure categories or a willingness to develop this expertise.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
- Experience preparing supporting documentation and maintaining audit trails.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
