SEMH Teaching Assistant needed in Small Heath, Birmingham 📍 Location: Small Heath, Birmingham 🕒 Hours: Full-time/Part-time 💼 Contract: Long-term/Permanent/Temporary 💰 Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people with additional needs? We are looking for a compassionate and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to support children and young people aged 11 to 16 with a range of complex needs, including Autism, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges, and related behavioural needs. This is a fantastic opportunity to work within a supportive team in a specialist setting in Small Heath, Birmingham, where every day is different, and every small success counts.
About the Role
- Provide individualised support to pupils with SEMH and ASD, both in the classroom and through targeted interventions.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff and support teams to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
- Assist in implementing behaviour support plans and emotional regulation strategies.
- Support the development of social skills, confidence, and independence in young learners.
Requirements
- Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, autism, or behavioural needs.
- A calm, empathetic, and patient approach to supporting challenging behaviours.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- A proactive, flexible mindset and a genuine desire to support vulnerable young people.
Desirable
- Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, or mental health (e.g. CACHE, Level 2/3 TA, Team Teach, etc.).
- Experience working in an SEN or alternative provision environment.
- Understanding of trauma-informed approaches and emotional regulation strategies.
