Reeson Education is recruiting a SEN Teaching Assistant for opportunities across Portsmouth, supporting pupils with additional needs in mainstream primary schools and specialist settings. This SEN Teaching Assistant opportunity is suitable for someone who enjoys building consistent relationships with pupils and helping children access learning in a way that works for them.

SEN Teaching Assistant Role

• Salary: GBP80:GBP100 per day
• Location: Portsmouth
• Start: ASAP
• Setting: Primary schools and specialist SEN provisions
• Contract options: Full:time, long:term and flexible assignments

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you may work 1:1 with an individual pupil or support small groups depending on the needs of the school. The SEN Teaching Assistant will work alongside teachers and SEN staff to provide structured support throughout the school day.

Responsibilities of a SEN Teaching Assistant

• Help pupils access differentiated classroom activities.
• Reinforce communication and interaction strategies.
• Support pupils with autism, ADHD, speech and language needs or learning difficulties where relevant.
• Follow EHCP targets and individual support plans.
• Help pupils manage transitions and classroom routines.
• Support emotional regulation using agreed strategies.
• Encourage pupils to develop independence rather than completing tasks for them.
• Share useful observations with teachers and SEN staff.

What Were Looking For in a SEN Teaching Assistant

A successful SEN Teaching Assistant will be calm, observant and consistent. Previous SEND experience is useful, although candidates with transferable experience from childcare, youth work, care, mentoring or similar environments may also be considered.

The right SEN Teaching Assistant will be comfortable following professional guidance, adapting their approach to individual pupils and maintaining clear safeguarding expectations.
