Senior Backend Engineer - API Development

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join their dedicated team in Sunderland . You will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the robust server-side logic and APIs that power their flagship products. This role requires a deep understanding of software architecture, database management, and performance optimization, working closely with front-end developers and product managers to deliver seamless user experiences. Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable and efficient backend services and APIs using modern frameworks.
• Develop and optimize database schemas and queries for performance and reliability.
• Write clean, well-documented, and thoroughly tested code, participating actively in code reviews.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features.
• Troubleshoot, debug, and upgrade existing systems, ensuring smooth operation and minimal downtime.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the team's technical growth and best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of professional experience in backend software development.
• Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Java, Python, Node.js, or C#.
• Extensive experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and/or NoSQL databases.
• Solid understanding of API design principles (RESTful, GraphQL) and microservices architecture.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) is a plus.
