Senior Backend Engineer - Scalable Systems

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Backend Engineer to join their forward-thinking technology team, operating entirely remotely from Edinburgh . This role is centered on designing, developing, and scaling the critical backend systems that power our client's innovative platform. You will tackle complex technical challenges, contribute to architectural decisions, and mentor fellow engineers, all within a fully remote , collaborative environment that prioritizes asynchronous communication and autonomy. Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable, reliable, and efficient backend services and APIs using Node.js , Python , or similar languages.
• Develop and optimize database schemas and queries for relational (e.g., PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases.
• Implement robust testing strategies, including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
• Collaborate effectively with remote product managers, front-end engineers, and designers using asynchronous communication tools.
• Architect solutions for high availability, fault tolerance, and performance under heavy load.
• Participate in architectural reviews, code reviews, and contribute to technical strategy discussions.

Requirements

• 6+ years of professional experience in backend software development.
• Strong proficiency in designing and building distributed systems and microservices architecture.
• Expertise in at least one modern backend language (e.g., Node.js , Python , Go, Java).
• Deep understanding of database technologies, caching mechanisms (e.g., Redis), and message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization technologies is highly desirable.
