Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Rail

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a specialization in the railway industry to join their advanced engineering team in Derby . This position is vital for the design and development of innovative mechanical systems for rolling stock and rail infrastructure projects. You will lead design efforts, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver cutting-edge solutions. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design of rail components and systems, including bogies, braking systems, and interiors, using CAD software .
• Conduct rigorous stress analysis , fatigue analysis, and dynamic simulations using FEA tools to ensure safety and performance.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials, in accordance with rail industry standards .
• Collaborate closely with systems engineers, electrical engineers, and project managers throughout the design and development lifecycle.
• Oversee prototype development, testing, and validation activities, ensuring designs meet performance and regulatory requirements.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance to manufacturing teams and support during production and commissioning phases in Derby .

Requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in mechanical design, with a significant portion within the rail sector .
• Proficiency in advanced 3D CAD software (e.g., CATIA V5, SolidWorks) and FEA analysis tools.
• Thorough understanding of rail vehicle dynamics, materials science, and manufacturing processes relevant to rolling stock.
• Knowledge of relevant railway standards and regulations (e.g., EN standards, RSSB).
• Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
