Senior Mechanical Engineer - Special Purpose Machinery

About the Role

Our client is a leading specialist in the design and manufacture of bespoke Special Purpose Machinery and is seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their team in Wolverhampton . This role is critical in leading the mechanical design aspects of complex, custom-built machinery solutions for a variety of industries. You will be responsible for taking projects from initial client requirements through to detailed design, specification, and supporting manufacturing and commissioning phases. The ideal candidate will possess a strong track record in bespoke machine design, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple design challenges concurrently within a fast-paced project environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design and development of complex, custom machinery solutions from concept to completion.
• Create detailed 3D models, assembly drawings, and manufacturing specifications using CAD software .
• Perform kinematic and dynamic analysis, stress calculations, and component selection for machinery.
• Collaborate closely with electrical engineers, controls specialists, and project managers to ensure integrated solutions.
• Specify and source key mechanical components, including motors, gearboxes, actuators, and bearings.
• Provide technical support during the manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning phases of projects.

Requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Substantial experience (8+ years) in the design of special purpose machinery or bespoke automation systems.
• Expertise in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor) and basic analysis tools.
• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, and materials science.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage project deadlines.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for client and team interaction.
