The Role
We are looking for a Senior or Principal Civil Design Engineer with a strong background in utility engineering and the UK drainage sector. You will play a key role in leading the design and delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure projects, from feasibility and concept through to detailed design, construction, and commissioning. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you'll help deliver high-quality, practical solutions that meet both client and regulatory requirements.

Wakefield (hybrid - typically 3 days in the office, flexible)
Outside IR35
37.5 - 42.5 hours per week
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate civil and drainage design activities in line with client standards
- Develop design solutions across all project stages (feasibility to detailed design)
- Manage and oversee design delivery, ensuring quality and accuracy
- Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs and maintain strong client relationships
- Support planning, programming, and commercial aspects of projects
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians
- Lead on resolving technical challenges and driving best practice across the team
- Attend and contribute to client and internal project meetings
About You
Essential:
- Degree-qualified Civil Engineer (Chartered or working towards ICE Chartership)
- Strong experience in civil design within the UK water sector
- Experience across water/wastewater projects including:
- oTreatment works
- oDrainage and sewer networks
- oClean water infrastructure and rising mains
Desirable:
- Strong understanding of hydraulic design principles
- Experience with WIMES, HazOp / ALM processes
- Knowledge of CDM Regulations and design responsibilities
- Ability to carry out or review hydraulic calculations and profiling
