Senior Quantity Surveyor
Duration: Long term
Industry: Civil Engineering – Groundworks – Residential
Contract Type: Freelance or Permanent
Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a dynamic team specialising in civil engineering groundworks within the residential sector. The successful candidate will take full commercial responsibility for groundworks packages, managing all aspects from procurement through to final account. This role requires strong contract administration skills, cost control, and commercial management to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
You will work closely with project managers, site teams, subcontractors, and clients to monitor costs, prepare valuations, manage variations, and mitigate commercial risks. The role demands a proactive approach to identifying commercial opportunities and resolving contractual issues, ensuring compliance with contract terms and industry best practices. Leadership and mentoring of junior commercial staff will also be a key part of the role.
This position is ideal for a Senior Quantity Surveyor with a solid background in civil engineering groundworks, who is confident managing multi-million-pound packages and subcontractor relationships within residential developments.
Skills:
Extensive experience as a Senior Quantity Surveyor in civil engineering groundworks
Strong commercial and contractual knowledge (NEC, JCT, or equivalent)
Proven ability to manage subcontract procurement and contract administration
Expertise in cost control, forecasting, and financial reporting
Experience preparing valuations, interim and final accounts
Risk management and value engineering skills
Excellent negotiation and communication skills
Ability to lead and mentor junior commercial staff
Strong organisational and time management abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel essential) and commercial management software
Software/Tools:
Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Commercial management software (e.g. CEMAR, Asta, or similar)
Certifications & Standards:
Degree or HND in Quantity Surveying or related discipline
Working towards or full membership of a recognised professional body (RICS, CIOB, CICES)
Valid CSCS card (desirable)
Knowledge of NEC and JCT contract forms
