Senior Robotics Software Engineer - Thunder
- london, england, United Kingdom
- Full time
- £90 - £150 Per Hour
Job Description
Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century’s most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril’s family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Maneuver Dominance team is building Thunder - an autonomous attack rotorcraft built to fight alongside crewed combat aviation to deliver overwhelming mass effects deep beyond the front lines. The team in London builds the Mission System and the Autonomy that makes aircraft like Thunder work.
The autonomy is key. It decides how Thunder coordinates with the crewed and uncrewed aircraft around it, how it adapts when the mission changes, how it behaves when the link drops and what it does in the situations no one planned for. Every one of those decisions determines whether the mission succeeds. That is the problem you would own.
ABOUT THE JOB
We are looking for a Senior Robotics Software Engineer to join us in London. You will work across networking, autonomy, systems integration and robotics, making pragmatic engineering trade-offs as you go and making sure Anduril products work together to deliver outcomes that matter. The problems here are rarely confined to a single system, and neither is the job.
You will lead cross-cutting technical efforts from concept to deployment, work directly with vehicle hardware teams and with operators who will execute the missions your code supports, and raise the bar around you through code review, system design leadership and mentorship. Engineers on this team are driven by a Whatever It Takes mindset - moving fast, building things that scale and keeping the mission in front of every technical decision.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Own the feature development and software solutions that are deployed to customers, and lead complex, cross-cutting technical efforts from concept to deployment.
- Write code to improve products and scale the mission capability to more customers.
- Collaborate across multiple teams to plan, build, and test complex functionality.
- Create and analyze metrics that are leveraged for debugging and monitoring.
- Triage issues, root cause failures, and coordinate next-steps.
- Work closely with Anduril and 3rd party vehicle hardware teams, as well as operational subject matter experts (pilots, UAV operators, etc.) to align on requirements during product development and iterate towards a final design.
- Write and maintain core libraries and services that perform critical functions for collaborative teams of robots - for example, motion deconfliction and contingency management of fast mover air vehicles.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineers, and help raise the engineering bar across the team through code review and design leadership.
- Travel up to 20% of time to build, test, and deploy capabilities in the real world
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong engineering background from industry or school, ideally in areas/fields such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics
- 5+ years of professional industry experience working with C++ or Rust programming languages.
- Experience building software solutions involving significant amounts of data processing and analysis.
- A track record of leading technical projects and delivering complex software systems to production.
- Ability to quickly understand and navigate complex systems and established code bases.
- A desire to work on critical software that has a real-world impact.
- A bias for action, extreme ownership, and the drive to see projects through from concept to production.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain an active UKSV Security Clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong background with focus in Physics, Mathematics, and/or Motion Planning to inform modeling & simulation (M&S) and physical systems.
- Developing and testing multi-agent autonomous systems and deploying in real-world environments.
- Feature and algorithm development with an understanding of behavior trees.
- Developing software/hardware for flight systems and safety critical functionality.
- Experience with distributed communication networks and message standards.
- Knowledge of military systems and operational tactics.
