Job Description
Senior Software Engineer, Motion Control
£50-65k
We are hiring an experienced software engineer who enjoys bringing software, electronics and mechanical systems together. This is an opportunity to take a leading hands-on role in the development and evolution of an advanced antenna controller system, creating reliable software that positions and moves antenna axes accurately and smoothly.
The role focuses on real-world motion control: driving different motor types, using encoder and sensor feedback, tuning closed-loop systems, and improving accuracy, stability and performance through measured data.
Senior Software Engineer essential skills
5+ years relevant software engineering experience (C/C++/Python) Strong software design fundamentals, including modular architecture, refactoring, testing and version control. Practical experience controlling motors or servo mechanisms using closed-loop feedback, including PID/PI tuning and position or velocity control. A sound understanding of gearing, inertia, friction, backlash, acceleration, overshoot, oscillation and stability. Experience with motor drives, feedback devices and real-time software using an RTOS. A degree in engineering or equivalent qualification or experience.
Senior Software Engineer desirable skills
Linux development, scripting and system diagnostics. General embedded systems Advanced control or estimation methods, including feed-forward control, Kalman filtering, sensor fusion or system identification. IMUs, gyroscopes, accelerometers, GNSS or multi-axis motion-control systems. MATLAB/Simulink or Python-based control and simulation tools. Interfaces such as CAN, SPI, I2C, UART/RS-485 or Ethernet. ROS 2, ros2_control, CANopen/CiA 402 or EtherCAT
