Senior Synthetic Organic Chemist - Medicinal Chemistry

About the Role

Our client is looking for an experienced Senior Synthetic Organic Chemist with a specialization in Medicinal Chemistry to join their drug discovery team in Derby . This role is crucial for the design and synthesis of novel small molecules with potential therapeutic applications. You will work at the forefront of innovative research, contributing directly to the development of new drug candidates. The position requires a deep understanding of synthetic methodologies, structure-activity relationships, and the ability to lead complex synthesis projects in a fast-paced, collaborative pharmaceutical research environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and execute synthetic routes for novel chemical entities aimed at specific biological targets.
• Synthesize and purify lead compounds and analogues for biological testing and SAR studies.
• Optimize synthetic procedures for yield, purity, and scalability.
• Characterize synthesized compounds using modern analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC).
• Collaborate closely with biologists and pharmacologists to guide compound design and hit-to-lead optimization.
• Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and contribute to scientific reports and patent applications.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry.
• Minimum of 5 years of post-doctoral or industry experience in synthetic organic chemistry, with a strong focus on medicinal chemistry.
• Proven track record in the synthesis of diverse organic molecules and heterocycles.
• Expertise in modern synthetic techniques, reaction mechanisms, and purification methods.
• Experience with structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies and computational chemistry tools is a plus.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
