Special School Nurse

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated registered nurse with experience of working with children and young people with complex health needs to join the York Special School Nursing Team.

The candidate will have experience of caring for children and young people with complex health needs and Special Educational Needs (SEND) who has a passion for supporting and improving the lives of children, young people and their families with additional needs. They will ideally have experience of managing gastrostomy/stoma care, wound care, diabetes, epilepsy, bowel & bladder, as well as writing EHCP’s and care plans, though full training will be given to the successful candidate.

You will be fully supported in this role and have opportunity to access continuous professional development, staff within the team are supported to find suitable training which will develop their skills and enhance the service that we provide.

The current hours of operation for the service are Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 17:00, the special school nursing service works 52 weeks per year, including over the school holidays.

The role will involve working with both health, education, and social care staff within the primary and secondary special schools in York, as well as short breaks settings, and in the child’s home. The role includes writing reports, attending reviews, implementing evidenced based care plans, health promotion, health screening, delivery of training and workshops, face to face support, advocating for the students and liaising with families, professionals and Local Authorities. The role also involves delivering health interventions to children with complex and profound physical needs.

The successful applicant will join a highly experienced team within the child health care group and will work as an integral part within the wider children’s service multi-disciplinary team, including the Children's Community nursing team and Specialist Nurses, therapists, consultants and social services to provide high quality care and promote effective communication.
