Telecom Optical Network Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Telecom Optical Network Engineer to join their infrastructure team in Edinburgh . This role requires a dedicated professional to manage and enhance our client's optical network, a critical component for high-speed data transmission in the telecommunications sector. You will be involved in the design, deployment, and maintenance of fiber optic networks, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and scalability. This is a hands-on, site-based position for an individual with a deep technical understanding of optical networking principles and technologies, contributing to the physical infrastructure that powers modern communication services. You will work closely with field teams and other engineering disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and manage optical transport networks, including DWDM, OTN, and Ethernet over Fiber.
• Perform optical power budget calculations, link loss analysis, and optical performance monitoring.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex optical network issues, utilizing specialized testing equipment.
• Plan and execute network upgrades and expansions, ensuring minimal service disruption.
• Collaborate with vendors to evaluate and integrate new optical network technologies and equipment.
• Develop and maintain detailed documentation of the optical network infrastructure, including fiber routes and equipment configurations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years of experience in optical network design, deployment, and operations within a telecom environment.
• Strong knowledge of optical transport technologies (DWDM, OTN, PON) and related standards.
• Proficiency with optical testing equipment such as OTDRs, optical spectrum analyzers, and power meters.
• Experience with network monitoring and management systems.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, site-based environment.
