Veterinary Surgeon – Diagnostic Imaging & Anaesthesia

Gainsborough Referrals is an independent small animal referral practice looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join our clinical team in a varied role with a strong emphasis on diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia .

Our diagnostic imaging service is growing rapidly. We have an established and increasingly busy 16-slice Siemens Somatom CT service , together with an O-Scan MRI system , and we are looking for a vet who would like diagnostic imaging to become a significant part of their working week.

This is not a Diagnostic Imaging Specialist position, and specialist qualifications are not essential.

We are looking for a good clinical vet with a genuine interest in CT, MRI and anaesthesia , who would like the opportunity to develop those skills while working alongside an experienced referral surgical team.

What would you be doing?

A significant part of the role would involve supporting and developing our diagnostic imaging service.

This would include:

• Preparing and positioning patients for CT and MRI examinations
• Performing CT studies using our 16-slice Siemens Somatom CT scanner
• Learning and developing MRI scanning skills using our O-Scan MRI system
• Selecting and developing appropriate imaging protocols
• Ensuring diagnostic-quality images are obtained
• Recognising when studies or sequences need to be adjusted or repeated
• Working closely with our referral clinicians to obtain the imaging required for individual cases
• Helping us develop and improve our CT and MRI service as the caseload continues to grow

For cases referred directly to our Specialist Surgeon, JB Lefebvre, JB would continue to review the relevant CT studies and make the clinical decisions relating to those cases.

We are not therefore expecting the successful candidate to arrive as an experienced radiologist. We are much more interested in finding a vet who enjoys imaging, has a good understanding of anatomy and would like the opportunity to develop further.

Anaesthesia and patient care

The other major element of the role will be anaesthesia and clinical management of referral patients .

You would work closely with our veterinary nursing team and referral clinicians and be involved in:

• Patient admissions and clinical assessment
• Planning and administering sedation and general anaesthesia
• Anaesthesia for CT, MRI and surgical procedures
• Monitoring anaesthetised patients
• Supporting the management of patients during longer or more complex procedures
• Post-anaesthetic and postoperative monitoring
• Assessing hospitalised patients
• Pain management
• Discharging patients and discussing postoperative care with owners
• Supporting the clinical team with the day-to-day management of referral cases

We are therefore particularly interested in someone who is comfortable with anaesthesia and genuinely enjoys this aspect of veterinary work.

Who would this role suit?

This could be an excellent opportunity for a veterinary surgeon who has spent several years in general practice but has developed a particular interest in diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia or referral medicine .

You may already have some experience with CT or MRI, or you may simply have a strong interest in imaging and want the opportunity to develop that interest in a practice where these facilities are used regularly.

We would particularly like to hear from vets who:

• Are RCVS registered
• Have good general small animal clinical experience
• Are confident with general anaesthesia and sedation
• Have a strong interest in diagnostic imaging
• Enjoy anatomy and diagnostic investigation
• Would like to develop CT and MRI skills
• Are comfortable managing patients through admission, investigation, treatment and discharge
• Work well within a small clinical and nursing team

Previous CT or MRI experience would be an advantage but is not essential .

A postgraduate certificate, Advanced Practitioner status or additional qualifications in imaging or anaesthesia would be welcomed, but again are not essential.

A different type of veterinary role

This is not a conventional first-opinion veterinary position.

There are:

• No routine vaccination clinics
• No routine first-opinion consulting lists
• No routine weekend shifts
• A predominantly referral caseload
• Regular exposure to advanced surgical cases
• Regular CT imaging
• The opportunity to become closely involved with our developing MRI service
• Considerable involvement in anaesthesia and perioperative patient care

For a vet who particularly enjoys the technical and clinical side of veterinary medicine, this offers the opportunity to concentrate on those areas without the pressures of a traditional first-opinion consulting diary.

Working hours

Monday to Friday, 10.00am–6.00pm.

There is no routine weekend working .

There may occasionally be an opportunity or requirement to assist with an emergency case outside normal working hours or at a weekend. This is not intended to form a regular weekend rota and would be discussed fully with applicants.

Our services include orthopaedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, spinal and neurosurgery procedures and advanced diagnostic imaging.

You would work closely with JB Lefebvre MVDr DipECVS MRCVS, European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery , together with our experienced veterinary nursing team.

Because we are independent, we have considerable flexibility in developing roles around the strengths and interests of individual members of the team.
