Workshop Controller (HGV Background Essential) Location: Wraysbury Salary: £30,000 - £40,000 DOE Full Time | Permanent
Overview An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Workshop Controller to join a busy and professional HGV dealership operation. This role is specifically suited to candidates with a proven Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) background. Applications from candidates with solely car or LCV experience will not be considered. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day workflow of a busy commercial vehicle workshop, ensuring maximum technician productivity, high-quality workmanship, and exceptional customer service. Working closely with Service Advisors, Parts Departments, and Workshop Technicians, you will play a key role in maintaining workshop efficiency and vehicle uptime.
Key Responsibilities
Workshop Operations
- Manage and coordinate the daily running of a busy HGV workshop.
- Allocate work effectively to HGV Technicians based on skill level, availability, and workshop priorities.
- Monitor workshop productivity, efficiency, and technician utilisation.
- Ensure repairs, servicing, inspections, and MOT preparations are completed within agreed timescales.
- Prioritise urgent breakdowns and time-sensitive fleet repairs.
- Track vehicle progress and proactively manage workshop loading.
- Maximise labour sales and workshop performance.
Quality & Compliance
- Carry out quality control checks on completed repairs and maintenance work.
- Ensure all work is completed to manufacturer, DVSA, and company standards.
- Maintain compliance with health and safety regulations and workshop procedures.
- Ensure accurate completion of job cards, inspection sheets, and service documentation.
- Monitor workshop housekeeping and maintain a safe working environment.
- Support warranty compliance and manufacturer audit requirements.
Communication & Customer Service
- Act as the key link between the workshop, service department, and parts team.
- Provide accurate updates on vehicle progress, repair status, and completion times.
- Assist Service Advisors with technical information and repair recommendations.
- Help manage customer expectations and minimise vehicle downtime.
- Resolve workshop-related technical queries and operational issues efficiently.
- Maintain strong working relationships with fleet customers and key accounts.
Candidate Requirements Essential
- Previous experience as a Workshop Controller, Workshop Supervisor, Senior HGV Technician, or similar leadership position within an HGV dealership or commercial vehicle workshop.
- Proven HGV, truck, or commercial vehicle background.
- Strong understanding of HGV maintenance, servicing, diagnostics, and repair processes.
- Experience managing workshop loading, technician allocation, and productivity.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills.
- Strong leadership and communication abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced commercial vehicle environment.
- Good IT skills and experience using workshop management systems.
Desirable
- NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.
- IRTEC accreditation.
- Experience within a franchised truck dealership environment.
- Knowledge of manufacturer warranty processes and compliance standards.
- HGV Licence.
