Arboricultural Officer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a dedicated Arboricultural Officer to join their environmental services team in the picturesque city of Aberdeen . This role is pivotal in safeguarding and enhancing the urban forest, ensuring the health, safety, and aesthetic appeal of trees across the local authority’s managed land. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing tree management strategies, responding to public inquiries, and contributing to a greener, more sustainable city. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a genuine passion for trees and their ecological importance within the community.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct regular inspections of trees on public land to assess health, identify pests or diseases, and determine necessary interventions.
• Develop and manage tree planting and maintenance programmes, including species selection and site suitability assessments.
• Respond to public consultations and enquiries regarding tree preservation orders, planning applications affecting trees, and general arboricultural advice.
• Prepare detailed reports, specifications, and tender documents for tree works, including pruning, felling, and new planting projects.
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including the Town and Country Planning Acts and the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
• Maintain accurate records of tree stock, inspections, and works undertaken using the council’s asset management system.

Requirements

• A recognised qualification in Arboriculture, Forestry, or a closely related discipline (e.g., RFS Certificate, Foundation Degree, BSc).
• Proven experience in practical arboriculture or tree surveying, preferably within a local government or consultancy setting.
• Proficiency in tree hazard assessment techniques and knowledge of tree biology, pests, diseases, and soil science.
• Familiarity with relevant legislation and best practice guidelines for tree management.
• Excellent report writing and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with the public and stakeholders.
• A full UK driving licence is essential for site visits across the Aberdeen area.
