Capital Projects Engineer

Capital Projects Engineer

Barnsley | Salary dependent on experience + bonus + benefits

What’s on offer

• Attractive Salary

• Annual bonus based on company and site performance

• Company pension

• Typically 8am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday, with option for an earlier start and finish on Fridays

• Real progression in a business backed by a large international group

A global manufacturer is investing heavily in automation at its Barnsley site, where it produces high volumes of metal components and assemblies for everyday consumer products. The site already operates a wide range of automated manufacturing equipment, with major capital projects underway to improve production efficiency and further investment in assembly machinery planned for next year.

To help make this happen, they are hiring for a Capital Projects Engineer.

The role

You'll take ownership of capital and improvement projects from initial concept through to handover into production. That includes building the business case, developing specifications, managing suppliers, overseeing FATs and SATs, and ensuring installation and commissioning are delivered safely and successfully.

Project ideas are shaped as a team, and you’ll play a big part in that. Dig into the production data, spot where time and money are being lost, and bring your ideas to the table. Then take the strongest ones and make the case for them. Current projects are projected to pay back their investment within a year or less, and that’s the kind of thinking they want more of.

You’ll present your proposals to senior leadership, so you’ll need to explain a robot cell to a finance director as easily as you’d explain it to a maintenance fitter.

What they’re looking for

• An engineering apprenticeship background, ideally backed up with HNC, HND or a degree

• Experience in a manufacturing improvement or projects role, with real results you can point to

• Mechanical sympathy. You understand how machines actually behave on a shop floor

• Strong Excel skills, particularly analysing production data for business cases

• Experience managing budgets, timelines and contractors

• The confidence to question how things have always been done

• Experience in a highly regulated manufacturing environment, such as automotive, or in engineered component manufacturing would be highly desirable.

They're not looking for someone who ticks every box. What matters most is someone with a solid engineering foundation, a curious mind and the drive to make things better.

Why this one?

This is a team where improvement ideas come from everyone, from the shop floor to the engineering office. People are open, approachable and genuinely care about each other with a supportive manager that is passionate about developing people. This role is a clear stepping stone into Engineering Management.

There's also the opportunity for international travel, visiting a sister site in Europe and equipment suppliers further afield, with a generous travel policy that allows some flexibility to extend trips.

Interested?

The interview process is two face-to-face stages, including a GEMBA walk round the shop floor. Interviews are happening soon with opportunity to start before Christmas, so don't wait!
