Chemical Process Design Engineer

About the Role

Our client is seeking a motivated Chemical Process Design Engineer to join their dedicated engineering department in Southampton . This role is integral to the successful conceptualisation and detailed design of new chemical plants and process modifications. You will be responsible for developing process flow diagrams, equipment specifications, and ensuring designs meet stringent safety, environmental, and operational standards. Working closely with project managers and other engineering disciplines, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions that support our client's strategic growth objectives within the vibrant industrial landscape of Hampshire .

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and optimise process designs, creating Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
• Perform mass and energy balances, hydraulic calculations, and equipment sizing for various chemical processes.
• Specify process equipment, including pumps, reactors, heat exchangers, and separation units, and evaluate vendor proposals.
• Ensure designs comply with all relevant industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, including safety and environmental legislation.
• Collaborate with project teams, including mechanical, electrical, and control engineers, to ensure integrated project delivery.
• Conduct feasibility studies and contribute to the preparation of engineering cost estimates and project proposals.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
• 3-5 years of experience in process design within the chemical, petrochemical, or pharmaceutical industries.
• Proficiency with process simulation software (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, Chemcad) and CAD software.
• Solid understanding of fundamental chemical engineering principles, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat/mass transfer.
• Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
