Location: Lanark, South Lanarkshire Salary: up to £18.18 per hour doe, plus applicable shift allowance Hours: 37 paid hours per week Contract: Permanent, full-time
Talent Media is recruiting an experienced CNC Turn/Mill Setter/Operator for an established precision engineering manufacturer based in Lanark.
The company manufactures complex, close-tolerance components for the aerospace sector and other demanding, quality-critical industries.
This is a hands-on setter/operator position. You must be able to carry out full machine setups independently—it is not a machine-operating-only role.
The Role
You will be responsible for:
- Setting up and operating CNC Turn/Mill machinery.
- Completing full machine changeovers.
- Selecting and installing tooling, workholding and fixtures.
- Establishing datums and setting tool and work offsets.
- Loading, proving and adjusting CNC programs.
- Producing and inspecting first-off components.
- Manufacturing complex components from engineering drawings.
- Monitoring tool condition and making appropriate adjustments.
- Inspecting your own work using precision measuring equipment.
- Maintaining close tolerances and the required surface finishes.
- Identifying and resolving machining, tooling and process issues.
- Completing production and quality documentation accurately.
- Supporting routine machine maintenance and maintaining a safe working environment.
About You
To be considered, you should have:
- Previous experience setting and operating CNC turning or Turn/Mill machinery.
- The ability to complete a full machine setup without supervision.
- A practical understanding of cutting tools, feeds, speeds, offsets and workholding.
- The ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings.
- Experience manufacturing components to close tolerances.
- Confidence inspecting your own work using micrometers, verniers, bore gauges and other measuring equipment.
- A methodical approach with strong attention to quality and detail.
Experience with multi-axis machines, live tooling, twin-spindle or sub-spindle machining would be particularly relevant.
CNC program editing or programming experience would be advantageous. Previous experience within aerospace, defence, automotive, medical, oil and gas or another regulated manufacturing environment would also be beneficial.
An engineering apprenticeship, NVQ or equivalent machining qualification is desirable, although substantial relevant experience will also be considered.
Shift Pattern
The current working pattern rotates between a five-day day shift and a four-night night shift:
Day shift:
- Monday to Thursday: 7:30am–4:00pm
- Friday: 7:30am–12:40pm
Night shift:
- Monday to Thursday: 9:30pm–7:30am
This provides an early finish every Friday while working days and a four-night working week while on nights.
Shift premiums are paid in addition to the basic hourly rate and can be up to 30%, depending on the shift worked.
Contracts also include flexibility to work a back shift should this be reintroduced in the future. No back shift is currently operating.
Applicants must therefore be comfortable working the current rotating day and night shift pattern and understand that a back shift could form part of the rotation in the future.
