SQL | Data Migration | ETL | Legacy Systems | Cloud Technology | Actionstep Complex Data. Critical Migrations. Real Ownership. Know your way around a legacy database? Confident untangling complicated data structures and getting business-critical migrations over the line? At Nexian, we're helping law firms move beyond outdated systems and embrace modern, cloud-based technology. We're looking for an experienced, hands-on Data Migration Specialist / Data Engineer to join our growing team and take ownership of migration workstreams across multiple client projects. This is a role for someone who genuinely knows how to deliver migrations, enjoys solving difficult technical problems and can get up to speed quickly. And if you've also helped improve migration processes, introduce better ways of working or guide other engineers, there's an opportunity to bring that experience to the table too. The Role at a Glance Data Migration Specialist / Data Engineer Fully Remote, UK-Based Competitive Salary DOE Full-Time | Permanent Working Hours: Some evening and weekend flexibility required for client go-lives, with time off in lieu About Nexian Nexian has evolved from a UK managed service provider into a digital transformation partner specialising in technology solutions for law firms. Our expertise spans digital consultancy, AI strategy, business analysis, data governance and Microsoft technologies. As Actionstep Global Partner of the Year 2026, we're helping legal practices transition from legacy practice and case management systems to modern cloud-based platforms. Demand for these projects is growing, and we're expanding our data migration capability to support more clients, deliver consistently excellent outcomes and build a scalable approach to future migrations. The Opportunity You'll join an established team of experienced data professionals, taking technical ownership of migrations from initial data analysis through to successful client go-live. You'll be working across multiple projects, often dealing with unfamiliar databases, complex financial information and legacy systems that don't always behave as expected. Your responsibilities will include:

• Analysing legacy databases, schemas, relationships and complex data structures.
• Extracting, transforming, mapping and migrating data into cloud-based platforms, primarily Actionstep.
• Developing, maintaining and improving SQL scripts, ETL routines and migration utilities.
• Profiling source data, identifying inconsistencies and defining cleansing requirements.
• Managing trial migrations, user acceptance testing (UAT) and final production cutovers.
• Validating migrated records and reconciling financial information and other critical datasets.
• Investigating migration defects, discrepancies and technical challenges through to resolution.
• Coordinating migration activity across concurrent client implementation projects.
• Working with project managers, consultants and technical colleagues to manage requirements, risks and timelines.
• Producing clear migration specifications, mapping documentation and validation reports.
• Contributing to improvements in migration processes, automation, tooling and documentation.
• You'll also need the flexibility to support occasional out-of-hours and weekend go-lives, with time off in lieu provided.

About You

We're looking for someone with proven technical migration experience who can take ownership of their work and deliver with confidence. You'll bring:

• Strong, hands-on SQL skills and a solid understanding of relational databases.
• A proven track record of migrating data between business-critical systems.
• Experience extracting, transforming, cleansing and validating complex datasets.
• Confidence interpreting unfamiliar database schemas and undocumented legacy structures.
• Strong knowledge of ETL principles, data mapping and transformation techniques.
• Experience managing migration activity across multiple projects or workstreams.
• Excellent troubleshooting, analytical and data reconciliation skills, particularly where accuracy is critical.
• The ability to work independently, manage deadlines and see technical problems through to resolution.
• A practical understanding of data protection and secure handling of sensitive client information. Particularly valuable experience includes:
• Legal practice or case management systems such as P4W, ALB, Proclaim, SOS or Liberate.
• Actionstep, Clio or comparable cloud-based practice management platforms.
• Experience handling legal financial data, including balances, transactions and reconciliations.
• Scripting or development using Python, PowerShell, C# or similar technologies.
• APIs, cloud technologies and system integrations.
• Experience working within a structured migration environment or helping develop repeatable migration processes.
• Confidence discussing technical issues directly with clients and explaining solutions clearly.
• LegalTech experience would be a real advantage, but it's not essential. What matters most is your ability to understand complex source systems, deliver accurate migrations and work through challenges without needing constant direction. Room to Make a Bigger Impact We're also interested in hearing from more experienced migration professionals who can bring fresh thinking to how our team operates. Perhaps you've helped standardise migration methodologies, introduced better tooling or documentation, or supported other engineers in delivering complex projects. That experience would be particularly welcome as we continue to grow. However, this is first and foremost a hands-on technical role, not a position focused on people management. You'll need to enjoy doing the work as much as improving how it's done. Why Nexian? You'll join a friendly, collaborative technology business where expertise, initiative and practical problem-solving are valued. You'll work on varied, technically challenging projects, with the autonomy to own your migrations and the opportunity to influence how the wider data capability develops. As Nexian continues to grow in the legal technology space, you'll be helping law firms make an important transition to modern systems, with a team that takes pride in getting the details right. Ready to take ownership of migrations that really matter? If you're an experienced Data Migration Specialist or Data Engineer who enjoys complex technical challenges and wants to make a meaningful contribution to a growing business, we'd love to hear from you.
