Engineering - Graduate - Sheffield

Area of Interest: Engineering

Business Area: Global Chief Information Office

Short Description: Develop in-demand engineering skills on technology that supports banking worldwide

About the business area

Our technology teams sit within our Group Chief Information Office (GCIO), building the digital platforms, systems, and products our customers and colleagues use every day, keeping assets and data secure, and delivering exceptional digital experiences.

Engineering builds and supports the systems that help the bank function smoothly and adapt to changing customer and business needs. The department focuses on delivering dependable, high-quality technology solutions that are secure, scalable and fit for purpose

Who you are

You're curious, collaborative and motivated by solving real problems with technology. What matters most here isn't having everything figured out already - it's your mindset, your willingness to learn and how you work with others. You could be a great fit if you enjoy breaking down complex challenges, thinking logically and building high-quality solutions. You care about doing things well, take pride in your work and want to keep improving. You're comfortable sharing ideas, listening to different perspectives and working with people across teams, cultures and locations. Technology moves fast, and that excites you rather than puts you off. If you're eager to grow your technical skills, explore new tools and help build solutions that make a real difference at scale, this could be the right place for you.

What you'll do

You'll work with engineers, architects and business teams on technology that supports HSBC globally. Depending on your team, you could help develop new digital products, improve existing services, test and maintain systems, and support software that keeps the bank running. You'll get hands-on with coding frameworks, programming languages, AI tools and DevOps practices, while learning how teams design solutions that are reliable, scalable and easy to support. You may also help monitor performance, investigate technical issues and recommend improvements. It's practical engineering work, with support from experienced colleagues, on systems used by colleagues and customers around the world.

What you'll learn

Over two years, you'll build your engineering capability through technical training, skills coaching and practical learning. You'll explore coding languages, tech stacks and engineering best practice through classroom sessions, self-led learning and hackathons, while developing a stronger understanding of how secure, scalable systems are built and improved. You'll also have funding for industry-recognised certifications relevant to your role, with opportunities for further learning supported by your team. The programme is designed to help you grow both your technical depth and your confidence as a technology professional. By the end, you'll have the tools, knowledge and momentum to deepen your expertise or start taking on greater ownership in engineering work.

Where you'll work

You'll work in HSBC's engineering community within the Group Chief Information Office, where teams build and support technology used across the bank. It's a collaborative environment made up of engineers, architects and delivery specialists working across products, platforms and markets. You'll be part of a modern office culture where teamwork, experimentation and continuous improvement are encouraged. Expect to work in a setting where technology is central to change, and where colleagues across functions come together to solve complex problems.
