Horticulturalist - Estates Management

About the Role

Our client seeks a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Horticulturalist to manage and enhance the extensive grounds of a prestigious estate in Edinburgh . This hands-on role involves overseeing the design, planting, maintenance, and care of ornamental gardens, woodlands, and agricultural plots. You will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of horticultural practice, managing a small team of groundskeepers, and contributing to the overall aesthetic and ecological value of the estate. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement annual planting plans and horticultural maintenance schedules for all garden areas and landscapes.
• Supervise and train groundskeeping staff, ensuring efficient and high-quality work execution.
• Manage plant health, including pest and disease control, pruning, and soil enrichment.
• Oversee irrigation systems and water management to ensure optimal plant health.
• Maintain and manage a nursery for propagation and plant production for the estate.
• Ensure the safe and proper use of horticultural equipment and machinery.

Requirements

• A recognized qualification in Horticulture, Botany, or a related field (e.g., RHS Diploma).
• Proven practical experience in horticulture, including extensive knowledge of ornamental plants, trees, and shrubs.
• Experience in garden design, landscape management, and plant propagation.
• Ability to manage and motivate a small team effectively.
• Knowledge of pest and disease control methods, including integrated pest management (IPM).
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining horticultural machinery and tools.
