HSDU Assistant - Band 2/3
Location: Omagh
Salary: Band 2 / Band 3
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Duration: Temporary, initially 3 months
Working Pattern: Full-Time, shift work

Apple Recruitment are currently recruiting for 2 temporary, full-time HSDU Assistants at Band 2/3 level on behalf of a public sector healthcare organisation based at Omagh Hospital
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to develop their experience within a Hospital Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit (HSDU). The successful candidates will support the provision of a high-quality decontamination and sterilisation service for reusable medical devices and equipment used across hospital departments and endoscopy services.
The posts are non-patient facing and training will be provided.
Key Duties
- Support the provision of a safe, effective and high-quality decontamination and sterilisation service within the HSDU.
Collect reusable medical devices, instruments and equipment from wards, theatres and endoscopy units.
Check, identify and accurately record reusable items received into the department.
Decontaminate, assemble, pack, wrap, seal, barcode, label and sterilise theatre trays and individual instruments.
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of surgical speciality tray lists and newly introduced instruments.
Carry out instrument identification and complete relevant checklists.
Undertake endoscope decontamination, including manual cleaning and the operation of endoscope washer-disinfectors.
Ensure appropriate channel parameters and procedures are followed during endoscope processing.
Prioritise endoscope decontamination according to procedure lists and service requirements.
Liaise with theatres and other departments regarding non-conformities, damaged or broken instruments and repairs.
Operate barcode traceability and IT systems to ensure accurate tracking of instruments and equipment.
Operate and monitor washer-disinfectors, including checking detergent levels and operating temperatures.
Operate and monitor autoclaves and complete relevant testing and validation procedures.
Use IT validation systems and maintain accurate records.
Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels within the department.
Maintain clean and hygienic work surfaces, equipment and departmental areas.
Comply with Health and Safety, COSHH, infection prevention and control and decontamination requirements.
Work in accordance with relevant decontamination standards, including HTM 01-01 and HTM 01-06.
Work within the organisation's Quality Management System and contribute to auditing and environmental testing requirements.
Attend mandatory training, online learning, competency assessments and continuing professional development activities.
Participate in mentoring and support the learning and development of colleagues where appropriate.
Participate in appraisal and competency processes.
Complete required training and work towards the Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare and Social Care Support Skills (Decontamination), where applicable.
Follow departmental procedures relating to HRTPS, training, annual leave and employee self-service systems.
Participate in the weekly roster, including weekend and bank holiday duties where required.
Respond professionally to queries and contribute to service improvements and changes in working practices.
Follow the required dress code and departmental standards at all times.
Essential Criteria
Band 2
- 5 GCSEs at grades A-C or equivalent, including English Language;
OR
- 1 year's experience working within an HSDU or hospital setting;
OR
- 2 years' experience working within an assembly or production environment.
Band 2 applicants must also be willing to undertake a Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare and Social Care Support Skills (Decontamination) following completion of 1 year's service.
Band 3
- 2 years' experience working within an HSDU; AND
A Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare and Social Care Support Skills (Decontamination) or equivalent.
- Experience of using IT systems.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Awareness of Health and Safety requirements.
Knowledge or awareness of HSDU services.
Flexibility to work shifts, unsocial hours, weekends and bank holidays.
Flexibility to work between organisation sites where required.
